Eden, NC

Hello and welcome to all visiting! I am Dal Williams, W4YQY and reside in Eden, NC. The picture above is of course myself and my XYL, Phyllis at North Myrtle Beach where we were married on Sept. 21, 2009. In the short time we have been married, we have done quite well between us now having 2 children and a total of 9 grandchildren!

Many who know me also know me as actually W4YQY the second! My dad, Clyde Williams (sk) was the original holder of the callsign from back in the late 40s. During that time period you may actually hold more than one call and he also held the call of W4BJF. At sometime during the mid 70s the rules changed and was only allowed to hold one callsign and at renewal time the FCC dropped the W4YQY call so dad became W4BJF fulltime. Several years back I had noticed that W4YQY had never been re-issued so I applied for it under the vanity program and was granted it. I also hold the W4BJF callsign now for a group of us who formed the Rockingham County Repeater Association several years ago.

Even though I was born into ham radio, it wasn't untill 1970 that I received my first ticket with the callsign of WA4FVX as a Tech. Today I hold an Extra Class License. My current station consist of a Icom IC-746Pro pushing a Kenwood TL-922A, a Kenwood TS-130S as secondary with a Dentron Clipperton L for that extra punch, and a Kenwood TR-9130 all mode for 2 meters. The present antennas are a RadioWavz G5RV at about 50' and a Cushcraft A3S tri-bander at about 50'. The Cushcraft A3S replaced a Hygain TH3JRS on March 5, 2011 when the new tower was completed. The new tower is a Rohn 25G with a height of 45' complete with a Hazer to raise and lower antennas for easy access. Many thanks to George, WN4LTY for help with the tower project. For mobile I use a Icom IC-2800H and had a Icom IC-706MkIIG with a Lil Tarheel II untill someone borrowed the antenna from the mobile in a parking lot one night and has never returned it!

My interest in ham radio covers a wide range from chasing DX, rag chewing, building antennas to repeaters. I am a member of the Rockingham Co Amateur Radio Club, Trustee for the Rockingham Co Repeater Association, ARES DEC for Area 9 for the Central Branch of the NC ARES, and also a Session Manager for the Rockingham Co W4VEC testing group. I feel that we all as Amateurs need to put forth the effort to Elmer and foster others along into the hobby of Amateur Radio. I am so thankful that I was lucky enough to be born with a full time Elmer as shown in the pictures below. I am also very thankful to all of the others who have helped me through the years and you know who you are.

What most people don't know is that W4YQY has been On The Air for over 60 Years! W4YQY has been a Family Tradition since the late 40s. Please read the W4YQY 60+ Years On The Air link or located in the May 2011 edition of the RCARC RockingHAMmer Newsletter.

Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me. If I do not have you in the Log Book now, I do hope that one day I will add your entry from the airwaves.

73 to all, Dal, W4YQY
